DAY 4
NOVEMBER 7
DU GIA → MEO VAC
It is now time to head up to Dong Van karst plateau, which is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Global Geoparks network. Most people agree that this is the highlight of their Vietnam adventure due to the spectacular mountain scenery and the abundance of local ethnic tribal groups. In the afternoon, we take the "the Most Wonderful" Ma Pi Leng pass along Happiness Rd. The spectacular scenery is out of this world and we have plenty of time to stop for photos. Our evening accommodation is a comfortable hotel.
Dong Van limestone karst plateau was organized by UNESCO as a global geopark in 2010. It exhibits the grand massifs, rock plateaus, gigantic caves, rolling valleys, and deep canyons of the area. This is Viet Nam's northernmost region and is also home to 17 different ethnic minority groups, all still keeping alive their rich traditions and cultures. It is the great combination of geological and cultural heritages that makes this hidden place so worth visiting.
Approx. Distance: 150 KM
Day 5
NOVEMBER 8
MEO VAC → BAN GIOC WATERFALL
Mountain passes, border roads, and Vietnam's most spectacular waterfall.
We leave the Dong Van Karst Plateau behind and ride toward Bao Lac, a small mountain town near the Chinese border. Following a mix of scenic mountain roads and quieter backroads, we climb the famous Fifteen-Level Pass before continuing along the border route toward Ha Quang.
If time allows, we stop at Pac Bo Cave, where President Ho Chi Minh lived upon returning to Vietnam in 1941. From there, the journey continues through Tra Linh and Quang Uyen, surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains and fields of corn and tobacco.
The highlight of the day is Ban Gioc Waterfall, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in Vietnam, followed by a visit to the impressive Nguom Ngao (Tiger) Cave. Standing right on the Vietnam–China border, this region offers some of the country's most unforgettable scenery.
Tonight, we settle into a local family homestay, sharing a home-cooked dinner, cold drinks, and another warm evening with our hosts.
